Tech Tuesday Webinar : Wall Energy Ratings (WER): What You Need to Know

Tuesday, May 6, 2025 (3:00 PM - 4:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Presented by: Rick Duncan

Wall Energy Rating (WER) was developed by researchers at the NRCC (National Research Council Canada) as a new standard for measuring the energy efficiency of building enclosures, in order to provide a more accurate measure of a wall's energy performance. This new standard is needed that considers all heat flow mechanisms to provide a more accurate measure of a wall’s energy efficiency.

WER is a number calculated from combining R-value and air leakage results of two separate, well-documented/robust ASTM test procedures for building assemblies (walls):

  • ASTM C1363-24 Standard Test Method for Thermal Performance of Building Materials and Envelope Assemblies by Means of a Hot Box Apparatus
  • ASTM E2357-24 Standard Test Method for Determining Air Leakage Rate of Air Barrier Assemblies

Studies have shown that WER reported for SPF walls are significantly better insulated than those using fiberglass. This is because SPF’s superior air-sealing properties can significantly reduce energy loss.

By educating your customers about Wall Energy Ratings, you can demonstrate the true value of spray foam insulation and help your customers make informed decisions about their building projects.
